During birthdays and holidays, our parents all taught us to act excited, even when we got a dud of a gift, and we'd sit there with our plastered-on faux-smiles saying, "Oh just what I always wanted…! A hat pin. Thanks Grandma!"

Look, it happens. Your great aunt gives you the same reindeer sweater she's been buying for you the past fourteen years, your friend buys you a box set of Cashmere Mafia even though you've told her a million times it's no substitute for Sex and the City. If you're like me, you have a stash of items received as gifts for birthdays and holidays that aren't quite what you were hoping for. Things that are super thoughtful, but you would never be seen wearing it or can't possibly imagine using it. These items have no gift receipt so there's no option of returning it, so now what?

The term "regifting" was made popular by our favorite Seinfeld characters in 1995 as a dirty word. But in this day and age of being thrifty and environmentally conscientious, and with a little help from your friends at Stuff, it can be done responsibly and we have the solution!

The Iowa City Junior Service League is hosting a fundraiser at the Idyllwild condominium community. This event showcases local business and "Green" ways of decorating. The event runs this Saturday from 10am - 4pm and Sunday from 12pm - 4pm. The cost of the tickets for this fundraiser are $10 and the funds raised will go to the United Action for Youth programs. For the first time...you will be able to purchase the items put on display!!! This Sunday from 4pm - 6pm, you can come and purchase items displayed at both condos. Part of the proceeds from these sales will also go to the United Action for Youth programs.

Have you heard about our Charity Umbrella Program???

Each month Stuff Etc supports a Linn County and Johnson County charitable organization. We have umbrellas hanging upside down at our register terminals, encouraging customers to throw in their spare change, etc.

We also encourage donations by offering a shopping discount for customers who put $1 in our charity umbrella. This has been a fun and successful project. Stuff Etc enjoys working with our community to support local organizations.

In August Stuff Etc chose to support the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Linn and Johnson County.

We raised $1972.00 for the Johnson County BBBS.

We raised $864.00 for the Linn County BBBS.

Kevin Kasson (a son of a long-time consignor) is up for Esquire magazine's "Best Dressed Real Man in America". Kasson will be on the Today Show tomorrow morning when they announce the winner. He is one of 5 finalists from thousands that applied. He will be wearing a suit tomorrow that he purchased at our Iowa City location. He is known for his classic style of such stars as Bogart, Sinatra and Cary Grant.

Clean out those closets!

Rule of Thumb: "If you haven't worn it in 6 months you NEED to get rid of it!"

I pondered this as I organized my closet this weekend. I was sorting through last years fall items and deciding what to sell. Some items I knew I had not worn last spring (when it was still freezing), but I REALLY like them, and surely I will wear them this cold-weather season. After all the organizing was done, I realized I had only pulled out 3 things. I have a shopping problem (the first step to recovering is admitting you have a problem)...so I knew there was more that had to come out if I was going to be able to put more in.

AWESOME TIP #1: Hang all your clothing in your closet backwards, with the hanger hooked onto the bar from the back. Once you have worn and washed your clothing hang it back in your closet with the hanger hooked on from the front. ***Illustration below*** What is still hanging backwards after 6 months, needs to be put in a Stuff Etc recyclable shopping bag and consigned at your nearest Stuff store immediately. Trust me you will not miss it!

Do you know about our Charity Umbrella Program???

Each month Stuff Etc helps the community support a non-profit organization in Linn and Johnson County. We have umbrellas hanging at our register area for customers to donate to our selected charities. We give incentive for shoppers to donate dollars by offering discounts for donations given to the umbrellas.

In July our Cedar Rapids Stuff Etc locations supported Foundation2 of Linn County.

Foundation 2 is a not-for-profit human service agency that offers crisis prevention and intervention programs to people of all ages. We are committed to positive youth development, suicide prevention, and helping build the foundation for stronger and healthier families and safer communities for everyone.

Here is how it works:
1. Bring in 3 canned goods to any Stuff Etc store the weekend that is NOT their Store-Wide 1/2 Price Sale...see below for 1/2 Price Sale dates.
2. The weekend for Stuff Etc is Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Mary Sundblad, owner of Stuff Etc, along with the manager of the Cedar Rapids East store, Jody Hagerty, the manager of the Cedar Rapids West store, Laurie Hanson, the managers of the Coralville store, Sara Sundblad and Brittany Lephew, and the manager of the Iowa City store, Stacie Frede, recently attended the National Association of Resale & Thrift Shops (NARTS) 22nd Annual Conference in Scottsdale, AZ. Carefully crafted for resale professionals, the four day conference is the industry's most comprehensive educational event of the year. Sundblad and team attended specialized resale workshops, stimulation networking sessions, a motivating keynote speech and a resale trade show during this focused program.

Mary Sundblad has been a member of NARTS for 18years. "We have an ongoing commitment at Stuff Etc to continue our resale education and stay at the top of our profession," says Sundblad. "We left the meeting in Scottsdale with renewed energy and a multitude of invaluable ideas to help us provide exceptional service and quality merchandising to our customers."

Iowa City has priced and displayed over 100 pieces of brand new, one of a kind, fun & funky jewelry items! These items won't last long!!! Stuff Etc turns 24 this month!!! To celebrate our 24th year in business we are having a Celebration Weekend! This weekend (April 17-19) we will run 24% off store-wide at ALL 4 locations!!! Saturday April 18th, we will have cookies, refreshments and door prize drawings throughout the day.

Here is a glimpse through time...

Original Stuff Etc location was located behind a bar (now Grizzly's) and occupied just 750 sq. ft.

2nd Iowa City location, moved to Keokuk St. in 1986, occupied 3,300 sq. ft.

3rd Iowa City location, moved to Pepperwood Ln in 1997, occupied 15,000 sq. ft.

Cedar Rapids West location opened in 2003, occupies 22,000 sq. ft.

Coralville current location moved here in 2003, occupies 36,000 sq. ft.

Iowa City store current location moved there in 2006, occupies 24,000 sq. ft.

Earth Month

April is Earth Month and Stuff Etc considers our business a local recycling specialist that can turn anyone's unwanted items into cash. We are excited for a whole month to be dedicated to such an awesome concept. We have really started introducing more ways to make our own business "green".

In researching this we have come across some mind-blowing statistics we would like to share:

Every year more than 450 trillion plastic bags are manufactured.
Plastic bags account for 10% of the debris that washes up along the coast line.
It takes fewer resources to manufacture plastic bags, but it costs more in cleanup efforts.
If instead of plastic bags, we used cloth bags we could save 6 plastic bags a week; 24 bags a month; 288 bags a year; 22,176 bags in an average lifetime.
If 1 out of every 5 people used cloth bags we could save 1,330,560,000,000 plastic bags over our lifetime.

Stuff Etc offers coupons for people who recycle their plastic bags with us. Stuff Etc offers eco-friendly shopping bags at all locations for $4.99 for our shoppers and consignors to help avoid the usage of plastic bags. These bags can also be used to consign without an appointment, whatever you can fit in the bag.

The average ink cartridge takes approximately 450 years to decompose.
Each year there are approximately 200 million pounds of ink cartridge waste. Placed end-to-end that would stretch from Washington D.C. to California and back again.

Stuff Etc recycles ink cartridges at every location. Coupons are given to individuals who recycle cell phones through our stores. Ink cartridges can be refurbished and refilled, cutting costs of ink cartridges up to 75%.

The metal used in cell phones can be toxic to the environment.
Approximately 60% of old phones have resale value and can be refurbished. The other 40% is refined or melted down and returned to its original state and then can be reused.

Stuff Etc recycles cell phones at every location. Coupons are given to individuals who recycle cell phones through our stores. American Cell Phone Drive is a program used to get working phones and 911 service to senior citizens.

Americans throw away more than 68 pounds of clothing and textiles per person per year.
Clothing and textiles represent 4% of the municipal solid waste stream.
The 12 to 15 percent of people who shopped at consignment and thrift stores in 2006 saved 2.5 billion pounds of clothes from re-entering the waste stream.

Stuff Etc takes in 1500-2000 items per day. We are a viable option for people to recycle their unwanted clothing and other items. All you have to do is make an appointment (or buy the eco-friendly bag to consign w/out an appt.), bring in your items, and we do ALL THE REST!
